It is suggested you do not use flip flops made in China because they are all plastic, especially the elastic rubber straps that will resist glue because they leak oil constantly causing any type of good glue not to adhere to the plastic. Flip Flops made in Hawaii and Brazil are called Havianas and are usually recommended.  Also any rubber flip flops with flat straps work best. The straps need preparation by actually sanding the straps before applying stones with a 3M green type scratchy scrubbee kitchen sponge. It is best to try to remove all the shiny finish. Next use ammonia to clean the surface and then wipe with water and don't forget to finish by wiping the surface once again with alcohol and allow it to dry completely.  Some may omit the sanding and the ammonia and just wipe the strap clean with alcohol a few times.  Depending on the flip flops this frequently works.  Remember to  make sure to let them dry completely. 

The most common glue used is E6000.

The  Swarovski rhinestone sizes most commonly used are 16ss(4mm) and 20ss(5mm).  They are often applied in rows of 2 or 3 depending on the width of the straps and on the size of the rhinestone used.
